Q: Why do cars have CV joints?
A: The CV joint is the flexible coupling that allows the wheels to be steered, as well as the suspension to travel up and down while smoothly transmitting power from the transmission to the wheels.
Q: How do I know if my CV is "bad"?
A: Typically the outer joint (by the wheel) will “click” or “pop” as you steer around corners. The inner joint (closest to the transmission) will cause a shake or wobble during acceleration.
Q: How long will a CV last?
A: A CV joint can last well over 100,000 miles; as long as it has plenty of clean grease to keep it lubricated and is not abused.
Q: Will a torn boot “click”?
A: No. The boot protects the CV joint by keeping the road grime out and the grease in the joint. When it gets old and torn it will allow the joint to be contaminated and accelerate its wear.
Q: How often should my CV boots be checked?
A: CV boots should be checked as often as the vehicle is on a lift. During oil changes is a good time.
Q: What make a CV click?
A: The parts inside a CV joint fit together tightly. If there is play due to wear they will slap together making a “click” or “pop” sound.
Q: Will a worn CV make my car shake?
A: Yes it can. If your car shakes or wobbles only during acceleration it may have a worn inner CV joint.
Q: Will a worn CV make my car pull?
A: No. Pulls or wandering are most likely caused by tires that may be worn due to misalignment and/or worn front end parts. Have your front end, alignment and tires checked. However a CV joint with no lubrication may bind and cause a jerk.
Q: What will happen if I don’t get it fixed?
A: A worn CV joint may break. If this happens you will not be able to drive the car, or keep the car from rolling by putting it in park or in gear, on a slope. A tow truck will be needed to move the car.
Q: How long does it take to replace my CV axle?
A: CV PROS can replace an axle in most front wheel drive cars in less than an hour.
Q: Will a CV make a humming/growling noise?
A: No, wheel bearings or tires may. CV PROS also services these.
Q: Will I need an alignment after my CV axle is serviced?
A: Although others may, CV PROS will not disturb any alignment settings while servicing your CV axle.
Q: How can I tell if I need an alignment?
A: A crooked steering wheel, noticeable tire wear, pulling or wandering, may indicate misalignment or worn/bent parts. Also if any parts that have adjustments are disassembled or replaced an alignment will be needed.
Q: How long does an alignment take?
A: Most alignments can be done in about an hour; however vehicles that need many adjustments or have rusty parts can take longer.
Q: How can I tell if my struts or shocks need replacement?
A: If a strut or shock is leaking or the vehicle has excessive sway or bounce the strut/shock should be replaced. CV PROS can check and replace them.
Q: What is the best way to find out the condition of my front end and CVs?
A: Have CV PROS perform a complete FREE front end and CV inspection!
