With recent news and video of self-driving vehicles from manufacturers Mercedes, Audi, Tesla, and even the technology giant Google, it begs the question, how much longer will we be in control? Maybe we’re old school but we like the feel of the getting in our car, picking the right music and going for a drive at our own pace where and when we like. We feel that driving is one of our most prized rights. Sure, having what is essentially our own limo driver would be nice from time to time. There are certainly advantages to it. Too tired to drive home? No sweat, simply tell your autopilot that your destination is home and let it do the work without being a hazard to other drivers on the road. Maybe the weather has turned for the worse during your commute and you’d feel safer if the autopilot took control? Or you could be visiting a new city that is full of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists who seem to have horse blinders on and are totally unaware of your presence. Sure, that seems like a good time to let the autopilot safely drive you to your destination without gaining a new hood ornament along the way.
Gee, It Sounds Like Automated Cars Have Many Benefits
While you can certainly see and imagine all of the benefits that would come with automated vehicles i.e. reduced accidents, less traffic congestion, take a moment to think of all of the good times you’ve had behind the wheel of a vehicle. From sneaking out with your parent’s car for the first time, to the road trip you took with friends that provided stories that shouldn’t be repeated but will last a lifetime and always bring a grin to your face. Heck what about that first speeding ticket you got and the flood of emotions that came with it. Sure, that wasn’t the best feeling in the world but it was a strong one, one that you’ll never forget, one that you can probably laugh about now. You wouldn’t be able to experience all of the ups and downs that you do now if your car was automated. It really is incredible the bond we can build with our car, it’s an everyday part of our lives, it allows us the freedom to see new places and try new things on our terms.
When it comes to driving ourselves or being chauffeured by technology, we hope the choice will always be ours.
